As the 2016 Latvian Arts Festival in Melbourne concluded and its flag was handed over to the next organising committee 57ALKD in Adelaide, plans were already being put into place for the year 2018. The 57th Arts Festival is also an opportunity to commemorate 100 years of Latvian Independence with a culturally rich and significant program.
The committee’s convenor, Rūdis Dancis, wasn’t at all surprised that at the first meeting members were enthusiastic, energetic and full of ideas. Despite some innovation, however, the main events will remain as expected: folk-dancing, massed choir concert and a ball.
But – what else is on offer? The invitation is for all to attend and find out for themselves. The committee is very experienced; a team who are forward thinking, excellent communicators and understand well the needs and interests of the Latvian community.
Many of the committee are well-known within the community and for their achievements: Lilita Daenke, Aldis Sils and Dails Smits. Joining them are Rasma Celinska, Karl Daenke, Inara Kalnins, Brita Lidums, Zinta Lidums, Ginta Orchard, Zinta Ozolins, Maris Ozols, Matiss Reinhards, Eriks Strauts and Dr. Janis Priedkalns. Perhaps less well-known is Imants Didrichsons, although locals will recognise him as the tireless provider of BBQ sausages. His role this time is to organise sporting events.
The tone of the first meeting was optimistic and focused. There is a shared commitment that the festival in Adelaide will be unforgettable. Australian Latvians are strongly encouraged to start planning for this event, to avoid any regrets about missing out.
More information about the program, performers from Latvia and other innovations will continue to be provided. There are 500 days until the KDs begin.
